Let's go there, Bill

A long while back, Bill Maher mentioned that people have asked him to bring up the topic of 9/11, and the possibility that it was perpetrated by our own government, on his show. At the time, he said he couldn't "go there."

On Real Time tonight, one of Bill's guests is Richard Belzer. "The Belz" is known for being a huge conspiracy freak.

This should be good.

You better believe I will be watching!

Hey Lizzy,

I'm not on my main computer, so I don't have your email with me at the moment, but I wanted to tell you. Tonight Bill Moyers interviewed Jon Stewart as the first official episode of his new program, and I thought about you since you have posted a number of his clips. Here's the URL (it's viewable online):

Well, for a second there, I thought Belz would go there, but I think he held back. He did say something like "don't get me started" when they were talking about Giuliani moving his offices before 9/11, but that was it. Big sigh. : (

However, I did get a big kick out of that writer for National Review. She was cut off at every turn with the truth, and didn't have a leg to stand on. It was a beautiful thing to see.

New Rules ruled.

Thanks for the link, Sheryl. I'll check it out.

Lizzy, have you ever caught the OVERTIME right after the show. It was great tonight.

I dont know whom you were speaking of being cut off... was it reporter Jamie Tarabay or speechwriter Lisa Schiffren?

I was talking about Lisa Schiffren from National Review, of course!

I've never watched Overtime after the show, LT, but I will now.

Belzer's a cantankerous crack-pot who isn't nearly as informed as he presents himself to be. Not trying to be Mr. Contrary here: consistently, pound for pound, each and every time he's appeared on Real Time, he's managed to embarass himself and make the above statement plainly evident. Last night was no exception, but comparatively, he didn't go completely overboard as he has done so in the past...

And Quayle's former speech writer last night was an agonizing case-in-point of someone who suffer's misguidedly from foot-in-mouth disease. Then again, unlike the Dan man, she probably knows the difference between a "Potato" and "Potatoes." : )

The world is a doghouse and you're all just living in it.

Can you give an example of how Belzer has embarrassed himself, Peter?

I couldn't agree more about your second point.

Like how every time he's on RT he invariably winds up taking something one of the other panelists says personally and lashes out at them. Just as he did last night when he took issue with being compared (slips my mind who) to someone else... guy always gets his bowels in an uproar about something... Got to be the "kvetcher's gene" stamped (as it is in mine) into his DNA...

I've never noticed that about him, but if that's what he does, and it's a personality fault, then I've got it, too.

I take everything personally.

Ahhhh, I love a good conspiracy!

Also, I was always a big National Lampoon fan, and Belzer was a big part of the Radio Hour and other recorded Lampoon Matierial. I don't care for Law and Order at all, but I suppose it's a good gig for him.

Even if he gets uptight at times, I think it would be fun to sit and talk with him.

I understand how Peter David "feels" about Belzer, but I wish when presented with an opportunity to actually provide an example, Mr. Davis would actually provide an example - not a generalism.

Personally I just don't like Belzer and I'm honest enough to say so.

Example: this past Friday, he almost flew off the handle when he was called "Rosie O'Donnell."

Episode last season, he pretty much had veins popping out of his head--and I don't recall the specifics--when a differing conservative (God I wish I remember the taffy-head's name, but he's on often enough and always a moron) and Belz did indeed figuratively stick his head up to his neck upside the guy's culo... took what was said to the next level and made it personal...

Not to go on and on about Belzer but he's just one of those guys you don't talk politics or religion with as he's socially incapable of being able to debate the issues without any sense of personal remove.

As for whether or not he's a good guy, I've spotted him at least a half dozen times ambling the aisles of Amoeba out here in LA, so if nothing else he's an obvious and avid music lover. Also thought he brought competent acting chops to the character "Munch" in early episodes of "Homicide: Life in The Streets," and by lesser extent the same character in tha other show... the one I never watch that has about six different spinnoffs... what's that called?

I didn't watch the show so I can't contribute anything there. So, about Richard Belzer:

I saw his solo comedy act on cable TV a long time ago and I thought he was really obnoxious. I like crazed sicko comedians -- I loved Richard Pryor and Sam Kinison -- but somehow "The Belz" just rubbed me the wrong way.

I hate to admit it but I like Law & Order SVU.

I've never been a fan of his stand-up act, but he was great on Homicide: Life on the Street, and his work on Law & Order SVU is top-knotch.

IMO, of all the L&O's, SVU is the best.
