Obsessed with poll numbers

If you really want to get scared this Halloween, forget Jason or Freddy, and try to catch the documentary, "Two Left Feet" on CNN.

It was about why Democrats have such a hard time winning elections. The reasons? Well, you already know what they are: guns, G-d, gays, the wuss factor, unclear definition of what it means to be a Democrat, and our liberal elitist attitude. (Heck, I'm the first one to admit I'm guilty of that last one. )

However, with times like these, we have our best shot.

Right now I live & breathe by the poll numbers in Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia.

These last 13 days are going to be painful. It has already started to affect my sleep.

Played out

Republican Bill Frist was on CNN's Late Edition this morning. The fear on his face was palpable. No matter what he tried to say, his body language told another story. He knows his party is in big trouble.

So, of course, in turn, they trot out their card of last resort: the fear card. It may have worked in the last 2 elections, but people are not buying it anymore.

From USA Today:

For the first time since the question was asked in 2002, in the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, Democrats did better than Republicans on who would best handle terrorism, 46%-41%.

In a last desperate attempt, the RNC put out an ad that might as well say, "if you don't vote for us, you'll die. "

Almost makes you feel sorry for them... NOT.

I'm not saying we have this thing wrapped up by any means. A lot can happen in 2 weeks...and we have those hackable voting machines to contend with. We cannot be complacent.

Watch this now

Olbermann 2006-10-18

"A government more dangerous to our liberty than is the enemy it claims to protect us from."
- Keith Olbermann

The more I think about the passing of "The Military Commissions Act," the more incensed I become.

Now that Bush has killed habeas corpus, any one of us can now be pulled off the street, deemed an enemy combatant, and then be locked away somewhere without trial.

According to Mary Benoit of the John Birch society:

"The bill authorizes a new system of military tribunals that would try persons designated 'unlawful military combatants' by the president. The term 'unlawful military combatants' is broadly defined and could include any person who is not in-step with the administration's policies on bringing 'democracy' to the world."

To my fellow left-wing bloggers: watch your back.

My Dream Ticket

I don't watch Oprah's show because it's on the same time as CNN's Situation Room, but today I made the exception. Barack Obama was her guest for the entire hour.

Like I said back in April when I saw him in person, I couldn't be more impressed by the Illinois Senator. This guy has it all.

While he won't answer the question if he'll run or not in '08, I think all bets are on that he will.

My dream ticket would be Feingold/Obama or Obama/Feingold, even though I'm quite sure the country isn't ready for a Jewish/Black ticket...which is a crying shame.

"We will look back on this day as a stain on our nation's history." - Sen. Russ Feingold

Bush Signs Bill on Terror Prosecution

By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON Oct 17, 2006 (AP)— Some of the most notorious names in the war on terror are headed toward prosecution after President Bush signed a law Tuesday authorizing military trials of terrorism suspects.

The legislation also eliminates some of the rights defendants are usually guaranteed under U.S. law, and it authorizes continued harsh interrogations of terror suspects, a provision Bush had said was vital.

Civil libertarians and leading Democrats decried the law as a violation of American values. The American Civil Liberties Union said it was "one of the worst civil liberties measures ever enacted in American history." Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin said, "We will look back on this day as a stain on our nation's history."

"It allows the government to seize individuals on American soil and detain them indefinitely with no opportunity to challenge their detention in court," Feingold said. "And the new law would permit an individual to be convicted on the basis of coerced testimony and even allow someone convicted under these rules to be put to death."

Note from Lizzy:

This bill represents the end of the America I once loved. I hope that no Dems voted for it... but if any did, may they never again get a good night's sleep.

I have looked all over the web to find out who voted which way, but I can't seem to find out. Does anyone know where to look?

And, one more thing, Senator Feingold, please run for President.

I think #3 is their favorite, especially lately

Submitted by Brian (I loved this)

Question: How many members of the Bush Administration are needed to change a light bulb?

Answer: TEN.

1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed;

2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed;

3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb;

4. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb or for eternal darkness;

5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for a new light bulb;

6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner "Bulb Accomplished";

7. One administration insider to resign and in detail reveal how Bush was literally "in the dark" the whole time;

8. One to viciously smear #7;

9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush has had a strong light bulb-changing policy all along;

10. And finally, one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country. And after all is said and done, no one will notice that they never actually managed to change the light bulb...
