My dirty little secret

Stress. I've been under a lot of it. Our basement is going into it's 5th month of renovation, then there was last month's relationship problems, dog worries, and to top it all off, I went off Lexapro. (Bad timing on that one.)

I can now safely confess, last month I cracked. The night before my French bulldog, Norman, was to have his surgery, I had a cigarette...ok, 2 cigarettes.

From there, it was all downhill. It only took a couple of days to be back to being a full-fledged smoker.

After being smoke-free for 2 years & 7 months, it was one of the dumbest things I've ever done. I noticed a major change in my health, and the smell is as bad as it ever was.

I told myself that I would quit when the construction was done, but I changed my mind...in a good way.

I hauled my ass to Costco for the nicotine patch, and as of today,
I am a non-smoker.

50 Easy Qustions to Ask Any Republican

by Robert J. Elisberg
The Huffington Post
(Submitted by Motomama)

Anyone can ask tough, intricate, confrontational questions. But all that ever does is start an argument, and it gets people nowhere. On the other hand, these are...well, easy. These are friendly questions. These are questions that allow another person to actually explain their thoughts, and explain fully. And to do so in as comfortable, as simple a way as possible, without feeling attacked, without feeling pressure, and without feeling no one cares what they have to say. Friendly. Easy.

Print them out, carry them around in your pocket, and the next time someone begins quoting from a Republican talking points memo, take the list out and ask.

1. What are the Top Seven best things that the Bush Administration has done?

2. Is the Iraq War going well?

3. After three years thus far, when do you think Iraq might be able to "stand up" so that America can "stand down"?

4. For his part in the event, how would you rate the job the President did protecting New Orleans from devastation?

5. How do you think the rebuilding of New Orleans is going?

6. When Dick Cheney and the oil company and energy executives met in private to plan America's energy policy, how much of their goal was to benefit consumers?

7. Do you believe in the President's call for an Era of Personal Responsibility?

8. Since Republicans control the White House, Senate and House of Representatives, how personally responsible are they for conditions in America today?

9. Why do you think they haven't been able to find anyone who can verify that George Bush ever showed up for National Guard duty in Alabama?

10. Would you want Donald Rumsfeld to plan your daughter's wedding?

11. Are you aware that no government in the history of civilization, other than the Bush Administration, has lowered taxes during a war?

12. Are you married?

13. Do you personally feel threatened by gay marriage?

14. Since getting elected, do you think the President has been more a uniter or a divider?

15. How do you explain the President's approval rating going from a high of 90% to the current mid-30%?

16. Do you like the government collecting personal data on you without a warrant?

17. How much money do you have in your bank account, stocks and investments?

18. What's your partner's favorite sex position?

19. If you have nothing to hide, why aren't you answering?

20. Should we build a wall along the Mexican border?

21. Why isn't anyone building a wall along the Canadian border?

22. Does that terrorist gang arrested in Canada count as a threat?

23. If you shot someone in the face while drinking, how fast would the police show up to arrest you?

24. If Donald Rumsfeld had planned your daughter's wedding three years ago, would the guests still be there?

25. Even if no laws are broken, do you think it's okay to reveal the name of a covert agent?

26. During your lifetime, approximately how often have you changed your mind?

27. Why shouldn't people dismiss you as a flip-flopper?

28. Where do you think the Weapons of Mass Destruction might be?

29. Where do you think Osama bin Laden might be?

30. Is it fiscally responsible to cut taxes, increase spending and create a $9 trillion federal debt?

31. Are you glad liberals passed such programs as Social Security, Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, women's suffrage, federal deposit insurance, unemployment compensation, rural electrification, child labor laws, minimum wages and the 40-hour work week?

32. What are the Top Ten best things that conservatives have given to America?

33. If you were on life support, would you want a doctor you'd never met making a diagnosis about you via remote television?

34. Do you think man-made greenhouse gases have anything at all to do with depleting the ozone layer?

35. If Donald Rumsfeld had planned your daughter's wedding three years ago, and guests were still there, how many factions would they now be split into?

36. How good is it that the terrorist Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi was killed?

37. Are you aware that in 2002 the Pentagon knew where al-Zarqawi was and presented three separate plans to kill him, but the Administration refused to act each time?

38. Is George W. Bush the kind of guy you'd want to sit down and have a beer with?

39. When he started talking about being a Born Again Christian, would you want to stay or leave?

40. Is Ray Romano the kind of guy you'd want to sit down and have a beer with?

46. Would a policy that allows torture be something that makes you proud as an American?

47. Has the Mission been Accomplished?

48. Do you feel comforted that Dick Cheney is a heartbeat away from being President?

49. If Donald Rumsfeld had planned your daughter's wedding, and guests started fighting and were killed, would you expect to be allowed to view the caskets when they were returned home?

50. How glad do you think George Bush is that he's no longer active in the National Guard?

The mainstream media is a complete joke

I'm sure I've said this before, but it's gotten worse.

For me, it has become increasingly difficult to watch cable & network news. In fact, other than MSNBC's Countdown w/Keith Olbermann, and Jack Cafferty's short segments on CNN's The Situation Room, I may give it up altogether. Our 6 & 10PM local news broadcasts also fail miserably.

While listening to Air America in my car this morning, I heard the news that the NSA eavesdropping program has been ruled unconstitutional.

When I got home, I immediately turned on the TV to hear the whole story -- and couldn't get it. I guess the JonBenet arrest is more important than the ruling that the president of the United States had violated the Fourth amendment.

Sickening.

Profligate

My very brilliant Uncle Richard (below) sent this letter to the editor of his local paper

From Random House Webster's Dictionary:

Profligate: An adjective. Utterly and shamelessly immoral or dissipated; thoroughly dissolute; recklessly extravagant

A word used to describe the War in Iraq.

"The war in Iraq will come to be seen as the most PROFLIGATE act of American Foreign policy in U.S. history"

Yep, that describes it all right!

AND...Bush wasn't alone.... he had and has plenty of help:

PAUL WOLFOWITZ (numero uno)
A wrong-headed, very bright ideologue, with narrow perverted ideas based on his views learned from the treatment of Adolf Hitler. No standing by, act and act quickly, use a pre-emptive strike. (Don't wait for the Mushroom cloud.) He succeeded in convincing George Bush and the Bush administration to use a pre-emptive strike against Iraq

DOUGLAS FEITH (numero dos)
A finicky, small-minded brilliant nit picker who inserted himself between reason and reality, experts and novices, to further the Wolfowitz pre-emptive endeavor while distorting intelligence to fit a pre-conceived Iraq invasion plan

DON RUMSFELD Defense Secretary in the 21st century with a 19th century mentality.
An impulsive meddler in military planning and post war civilian management affairs, all of which he was the least capable of doing and all of which he assigned to FEITH and thus ended up disastrously

GENERAL TOMMY R. FRANKS Central Commander/Ass-kissing general.
Franks ignored Pentagon experts in order to suck up to Rumsfeld to further his own career

DICK (shotgun) CHENEY (VP)
A stubborn liar. After becoming Vice-President, Dick tried to make up for his 1991 mistake as Defense Secretary (convincing George Bush I not to go into Baghdad.) Dick cherry-picked intelligence to fit a pre-conceived decision to go into Iraq

JUDITH MILLER Former national reporter for the New York Times.
Miller's lies and deceit made her an accessory to the Iraq invasion, as well as ruining her career and muddied the Times

AMBASSADOR L. PAUL BREMER III
Guilty of disbanding the Iraqi Army and the Bathists infrastructure en masse, after being warned of the extreme consequences, thus causing a vacuum in civil order and chaos in Iraq and leading to the disrepute and disrespect of American troops.

RICHARD PERL and AHMED CHALABI
Co-conspirators helping to lead the American government into invading IRAQ and involving itself in a morass it cannot extract itself from

CONGRESS
A group of lambs guilty of omitting to ask tough questions before voting for the use of force and offered no challenge to the administrations lack of post war planning. Both Republicans, who still won't own up to their mistakes and the Democrats who at least are starting to do so

THE PRESS
In general!

I can go on with the list of mistake makers for another few pages, but I won't bore the pro-war, right wing, conservative readers with more names of the aides and abettors of our illustrious president.

Needless to say, the above named took a neophyte, ignorant, stubborn president with no experience in foreign affairs, and convinced him to destroy years of US foreign policy, lose our allies, fail to fight terrorists who threaten us, kill 2600 American soldiers, wound 20,000 more, kill 40,000 Iraqi men women and children, alienate our friends, create hatred and distrust and destroy any hope for a negotiated, unified world attempt to stop international terrorism.

AND now he says" The next President will handle it, I'll leave it to him
(Notice he never said "her").

We had 9/11 and then all reason left us. Iraq was an arrogant, ill conceived, poorly thought out war. It was an inept sham, a joke, or as the new book by Thomas E. Ricks says, a military and post military "FIASCO".

Richard H. *
New York

So folks, re-elect the fools who brought you Iraq. The liars, the fabricators, the users of fear and false propaganda: the Republicans, and get more of the same.

* Note from Lizzy: I wasn't sure if I should publish his full name, so I'm erring on the side of caution

Hey Bush -- What's All This Firing of Gay Arabic Linguist Specialists?

Chris Durang
The Huffington Post
08/11/2006

Hey, Bush. How are you this morning?

You know, I think we're all very grateful the British Foreign Intelligence discovered that terrorist plot BEFORE it happened. That's really terrific.

I wonder if our intelligence is in as good shape? Can't tell yet.

And it makes me think of all those stories over the years about the Army firing soldiers who are Arabic linguists just because someone accused them of being gay. Linguist, by the way, means they read and perhaps speak Arabic.

Boy, those language skills sound pretty helpful for the war on terror, huh?

Here's the latest one - a soldier named Bleu Copas was a decorated sergeant and Arabic language specialist, and he was dismissed from the U.S. Army under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy... though he didn't "tell" anybody, his dismissal was the result of a series of anonymous emails sent to superiors, accusing Bleu of being gay.

Now I admit it - his first name is scary. Bleu means "blue" in French. Why did his parents name him blue? And not only that but, judging from the picture that accompanies the CNN.com story, he's quite handsome. (http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/27/gaysmilitary.ap.ap/)

So much so, I suppose it's possible that a straight soldier who felt really horny one day might choose to dally with him. Or if not a straight soldier, maybe another gay soldier might choose to dally with him. And, boy, the world would be a less worthwhile place if that happened, wouldn't it?

President Bush, I know you and your evangelical and fundamental Christian base really value abstinence. You and they think that if people can just go through their lives and NEVER EVER HAVE SEX, the world would be a better place. You even prefer that American teenagers and African men, women and children die of AIDS rather than let anyone tell them of how to use contraception to protect themselves. That's your position, right? ONLY TALK ABOUT ABSTINENCE.

You really are a card. I know Jesus Christ talks to you, but you know what - he talks to me too, and he thinks you're just nuts.

So, okay - I doubt I can convince you to support telling people at risk of AIDS about condoms. I know it's just too important to you and your base that people not touch their genitals. And, of course, that is one of the main teachings of Christ, it's in the Beatitudes, "Blessed are they who never touch their genitals, for they shall be pure as the innocent babe."

Fine, we'll grant you that nobody should hear about condoms, and that sex is bad, and that touching yourself is bad, except in marriage where it's fine but slightly repellent. (I'm sorry, I'm channeling Saint Paul on that one.)

But tell me - I know you talk about the war on terror. Do you think just possibly you might not keep firing solidiers who speak Arabic, and who could be used to protect us?

Do you remember that there was a backlog of email messages in Arabic that related to 9-11, but weren't translated until several days AFTER 9-11, because there was a backlog of non-translated messages because the intelligence services don't have enough translators?

And it's not just Bleu Copas, Mr. President.

Look at this quote from the CNN story: "But the GAO [General Accounting Office] also noted that nearly 800 dismissed gay or lesbian service members had critical abilities, including 300 with important language skills. Fifty-five were proficient in Arabic, including Copas, a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in California."

Yo Bush. Do you speak Arabic? Does Laura? Does Condi? I won't ask about Donald, because he seems ready for a rest home... any hope of that, he doesn't seem well, I worry for him.

But really... 55 gay people in the army who are proficient in Arabic and you want them fired?

Gosh, and here I thought you wanted to protect us all in your war on terror.

Whaddya say, President Bush?

Do you think for five seconds you could not cater to your fundamentalist base, and you might try to protect us FOR REAL rather than just with a lot of fancy talk?

How about reinstating those 55 maybe gay people who are proficient in Arabic? And maybe find out about the other 745 who had "critical abilities." Sounds like they might be helpful too.

What do you think? Any chance you'll consider putting the safety of America above worrying about whether someone is gay or not?

(Here's another article with more information on this case and this issue: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-2077.html

It's from a British gay newspaper, I hope that doesn't scare the President or anyone else. I don't think it turns you gay to read such a newspaper. It's just there's good information, and it has some stuff not in the CNN report. So don't be scared.)

Dear Joe: A GOP Love Letter

Have you run across the site Technorati yet? Birthday girl, Motomama, turned me on to it today. When you type in your blog address, it shows you how many other blogs are linked to yours -- very cool.

One of the many excellent blogs linked to mine is Pissed On Politics. That is where I found this video.

Hearing that Coulter, Savage, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc, all supported Leiberman, you know we did the right thing...big time.

"...our side has a little housecleaning to do"

It's All About Who You Sleep With ... a Cautionary Note from Michael Moore:

Friends,

Let the resounding defeat of Senator Joe Lieberman send a cold shiver down the spine of every Democrat who supported the invasion of Iraq and who continues to support, in any way, this senseless, immoral, unwinnable war. Make no mistake about it: We, the majority of Americans, want this war ended -- and we will actively work to defeat each and every one of you who does not support an immediate end to this war.

Nearly every Democrat set to run for president in 2008 is responsible for this war. They voted for it or they supported it. That single, stupid decision has cost us 2,592 American lives and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives. Lieberman and Company made a colossal mistake -- and we are going to make sure they pay for that mistake. Payback time started last night.

I realize that there are those like Kerry and Edwards who have now changed their position and are strongly anti-war. Perhaps that switch will be enough for some to support them. For others, like me -- while I'm glad they've seen the light -- their massive error in judgment is, sadly, proof that they are not fit for the job. They sided with Bush, and for that, they may never enter the promised land.

To Hillary, our first best hope for a woman to become president, I cannot for the life of me figure out why you continue to support Bush and his war. I'm sure someone has advised you that a woman can't be elected unless she proves she can kick ass just as crazy as any man. I'm here to tell you that you will never make it through the Democratic primaries unless you start now by strongly opposing the war. It is your only hope. You and Joe have been Bush's biggest Democratic supporters of the war. Last night's voter revolt took place just a few miles from your home in Chappaqua. Did you hear the noise? Can you read the writing on the wall?

To every Democratic Senator and Congressman who continues to back Bush's War, allow me to inform you that your days in elective office are now numbered. Myself and tens of millions of citizens are going to work hard to actively remove you from any position of power.

If you don't believe us, give Joe a call.

Yours,

Michael Moore
mmflint@aol.com

P.S. Republicans -- sorry to leave you out of this letter. It's just that our side has a little housecleaning to do. We'll take care of you this November.

Lamont WINS

It's a brand new day, everyone. Finally.

...Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Rove/ Leiberman hacked own site

With the news coming out that Lamont supporters hacked Leiberman's website, I felt it was very important to say, don't believe it for a second, folks. It's a dirty trick that is right out of Karl Rove's playbook. Leiberman is deservedly trailing in the polls and this fake news was put out there to sway gullible undecided voters.

Connecticut voters, PLEASE don't fall for it. This race is of utmost importance to our country. If Lieberman wins, Hillary will be our candidate in 2008, and we will lose.

The World Can't Wait

I get my news from a lot of sources, and all I can say is that I don't know how I feel about the middle east situation anymore. It's in my blood to side with Israel, but I don't like what I'm seeing (on both sides, of course.)

However, there is one thing I do know. Bush has to go. The world is falling apart...and he goes on vacation.

Snave thinks that impeachment hearings would ultimately be a bad move. I do not. This goes way beyond politics. I don't think we can wait the 900 days he has left in office to be rid of him. I get the sense that we're running out of time.

I know it's a bleak picture, but have you heard any substantive news lately that isn't?
