Thinking about the weather

My brother, Paul.
Circa: Early 70's

There is something very wrong with the weather. I have lived in Minnesota since I was 2 years old and I cannot remember a winter this mild.

To be able to walk my dogs outside during the last week of January is unheard of here, yet I've done it every day this week. Tomorrow is going to be even warmer -- almost 50 degrees.

Normally, at this time of year we are in the deep freeze. 20 below would not be abnormal. We should also have at least a foot of snow on the ground, yet all we have is an inch.

I'm not complaining - I hate winter. However, if I had a choice between a normal MN winter and global climate change, I'd take the former.

Scientists have said that in 30 years Minnesota will be more like Missouri -- but there is no such thing as global warming, right George?

Well it's getting a lot wetter in places like NZ in fact once in a hundred year floods have been hitting certain coastal areas at least once a year for the past 5 years and the frequency of these events is predicted to increase!

Sorry to post completely off topic, but I need help.

Carol Shea-Porter is a genuine hero. She served food to the homeless of New Orleans for 19 days out of her truck following Katrina. Please help me send her to congress by voting in this internet poll. http://www.nhinsider.com

In this neck of the woods, we haven't gotten the same kinds of snowfall we would get in the 60's and 70's. I don't think that's because I was smaller then and it made the snow seem deeper. We used to get a couple of feet during the winter, now we get about half that if we are lucky.

Our springs tend to still be wet, same with our autumns... but our summers have gotten hotter and drier with longer periods of no rain than in earlier times. We went through a period last summer in which it didn't rain but once (just a trace of precipitation) in something like seven weeks, with temperatures in the 90's just about every day.

Having watched the weather in this part of Oregon for much of my 48 years, I have to say patterns have changed during that time, without a doubt. The reason? It's hard to say for sure, but based on an overwhelming amount of scientific research, I have to say I have my suspicions...
