But, when he cozied up to Bush, he lost me.

As far as Bush Sr goes, it reminds me of my refrigerator magnet. I'll just grab on to one of the comments Snaveroo made, basically folk who have seen combat are more likely to have insight into it, and further are less likely to commit troops to ill conceived wars.

I guess it's widely know that George senior had deliborated long and hard over the first Gulf war, and had asked all the right questions, even further he realized the true human cost of war for both sides (not that I'm blowing George Snrs trumpet). Guess the adage 'like father like son' does not apply here.Damienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18216696796162994082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7653541.post-1133289608606035792005-11-29T12:40:00.000-06:002005-11-29T12:40:00.000-06:00They like to come back at this one with statements...They like to come back at this one with statements like "Who says you can't make policy decisions if you never served in the military?" and "How many of the Democrats you listed voted in favor of invading Iraq?" I don't think Rangel did, anyway... and until I saw this version of these lists, I didn't know he served honorably during a time of war.

I think people who have military experience may have better insights into how the military operates, and some of them may have seen combat. People who know firsthand the horrors of war may well be more equipped than the non-servers to explain why we shouldn't send our troops into harm's way unless there is a damned good reason. Some of them may have seen their fellow men die on battlefields.

The decisions of those with military service might end up being based more on experience than on politics when it comes to how to use the military. Whereas the pundit non-server types might tend to view our military as a tool with which to gain political advantages in the world, I think the ones who served may be more likely to view the military's purpose as that of defending our nation rather than a collection of human lives that are disposable in pursuit of some kind of vision of empire. The GOP wants to play Risk, the lefties want to see the military used to protect our country. Big difference, and it becomes even more obvious when looking at the lists you provided.

At least that's what I think... I've always thought the purpose of our military was to protect the USA.

And aside from Rumsfeld and McCain, I don't think the GOP has very much going for it in this area. This is one reason I think they may run McCain in 2008. "John McCain: Vietnam POW, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross". And he supports the Iraq war? That alone is all the proof I need that the man is crazy, too much so to be our next president.Snavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13763424943041003098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7653541.post-1133252186695703962005-11-29T02:16:00.000-06:002005-11-29T02:16:00.000-06:00I'll forward it to my dad.
